Project Background

Papua New Guinea is one of the world's significant copper-gold producers. The Ok Tedi copper-gold mine is located in the Star Mountains region of Western Province, just 16 kilometers from the Indonesian border. In operation since 1984, it remains one of the country's largest mining projects, with its mine life now extended to 2050.

The Ok Tedi mining area sits deep in a remote tropical rainforest, receiving over 8,000 mm of annual rainfall with consistently high temperatures and humidity year-round — conditions that demand durable, comfortable worker accommodation. As mining operations continue to expand, the site required upgraded living facilities to ensure workers could rest and live in a healthy environment.

9States was commissioned by a mining company operating in Papua New Guinea to design and deliver a 500-person modular worker camp for their Ok Tedi operations.

Tropical Rainforest Adaptation

Papua New Guinea's tropical climate presents extreme conditions: year-round high temperatures (25–32°C daily average), extremely high humidity (80–90%), and annual rainfall exceeding 8,000 mm at the mine site. The camp was specially engineered to address these challenges:

  1. Corrosion & Moisture Resistance: All steel structures hot-dip galvanized; anti-corrosion sandwich panels for wall cladding; SPC waterproof flooring throughout.
  2. Ventilation & Cooling: Each dormitory fitted with oversized ventilation windows and roof ventilators, leveraging natural convection to reduce indoor temperatures.
  3. Roof Drainage: Steep-pitch double-layer insulated roof with large-section downpipes to handle tropical downpours.
  4. Insect Protection: Stainless steel insect mesh on all vents; double-door entry on dormitories.
  5. Thermal Insulation: High-density fiberglass wool insulation in walls and roof to minimize daytime heat transfer.

Logistics & Transport

The shipment route: Shanghai Port → sea freight to Lae, PNG → coastal shipping to Kiunga River Port → road transport approximately 140 km to Tabubil. The flat-pack design increased container loading efficiency by 40%, significantly reducing long-distance shipping costs.
