Ghana, Africa's largest gold producer, achieved a record 5.94 million ounces of gold output in 2025 — a 23.4% year-on-year increase. With expansions at Newmont's Ahafo South mine, the commissioning of Shandong Gold's Namdini mine, and a new Azumah Resources mine in the northwest expected to begin production in 2026, Ghana's mining sector is experiencing a significant growth cycle.

More mines mean more workers need accommodation. Ghana's gold mining operations are concentrated in the southwestern tropical rainforest belt — year-round high heat and humidity, average temperatures of 26-29°C, humidity above 70% most of the year, and two rainy seasons (April-June and September-November). In this environment, traditional brick-and-mortar camp construction takes too long and costs too much, while basic prefab shelters cannot meet modern workforce accommodation standards.

9States recently delivered a 600-person modular worker camp for a gold mine in Ghana's Western Region — from contract signing to first move-in in just 42 days.

Camp Layout & Facilities

The camp is divided into four functional zones:

Living Area

  • 300 folding container dormitory units, 2 persons per room, each with independent air conditioning, LED lighting, power outlets, and storage lockers
  • Dedicated shower and toilet modules per dormitory block (wet-dry separation)
  • Central laundry facility

Dining Area

  • Central mess hall with 200-person capacity, equipped with professional kitchen
  • Independent water treatment system

Recreation Area

  • Small gymnasium
  • Entertainment room (TV and board games)
  • Outdoor basketball court

Administration Area

  • 20 site offices (flat-pack container structure)
  • Medical room / first-aid station
  • Warehouse and tool storage

Climate-Adaptive Engineering

Designed specifically for Ghana's hot and humid tropical conditions, the camp incorporates several targeted features:

  • Ventilated roof system: Double-layer roof with heat-reflective coated metal outer layer and insulated sandwich panel inner layer — the air gap between layers promotes natural ventilation and significantly reduces interior temperatures
  • Mold and moisture resistance: All wall panels and flooring treated with anti-fungal coatings; units elevated 300 mm above grade to prevent ground moisture ingress
  • Stormwater management: Dedicated drainage trenches and rainwater harvesting systems around each building to handle heavy tropical downpours
  • Wind resistance: Connectors and foundation system designed for wind loads equivalent to Category 8 wind
  • Corrosion protection: All metal components hot-dip galvanized to withstand the high-humidity environment

Logistics & Installation

Takoradi Port is a major West African mineral export hub with full container and break-bulk handling capability. The road distance from port to mine site is approximately 80 km on paved roads, offering favorable transport conditions.

The installation followed a phased delivery strategy:

  1. Phase 1 (Day 20): Administration offices and first 100 dormitory units handed over — sufficient for the advance team to move in
  2. Phase 2 (Day 30): Remaining dormitory units and central mess hall delivered — camp fully operational
  3. Phase 3 (Day 42): All ancillary facilities completed — camp officially commissioned

The mine operator evaluated three accommodation options before selecting the modular solution:
