In the global seaborne iron-ore trade, Brazil has long held more than a fifth of the market, sharing the lion's share with Australia. And most of Brazil's iron ore comes from a single place: the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Iron Quadrangle) in the state of Minas Gerais.
This mountainous region of roughly 7,000 square kilometers has been mined for more than 300 years. Today it hosts most of Brazil's richest iron deposits, together with the surface facilities of mining giants such as Vale and Anglo American. Over the past two decades it rode the global iron-ore "super cycle" through a wave of expansion — Brazilian iron-ore output once climbed from around 70 million tonnes a year toward the 800-million-tonne level, and worker camp demand around the mines rose right along with it.
Mining expansion brings one practical question: where do the people live?
This article is about how we built a camp at an iron-ore project in the Iron Quadrangle — and what makes camps here different from anywhere else.
Why are camps hard to build here? Three reasons.
The terrain. The region is, in essence, rolling hills carved out by rivers. The ore bodies sit inside the mountains, so mines tend to be either in valleys or on hillsides. Flat ground is a scarce resource — and it is the most valuable real estate on any mine site, reserved first for the processing plant and waste dumps. Camp locations end up squeezed into leftover parcels: slope sites and strips beside drainage gullies are common.
The rain. Minas Gerais sits in the Southern Hemisphere, with hot, humid summers (December to February). The wettest month, December, can bring close to 300 mm of rain. When the rains come, the ground is a red, sticky weathered iron-ore soil, and heavy equipment sinks — wheels spin in place. Every year, the dry season (April to October) is the real window for construction and haulage.
The word "environment." The Iron Quadrangle sits at the edge of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) ecological belt, with diverse vegetation. Brazil's mining environmental approvals are strict to begin with, and the siting, drainage and waste handling of a camp all go through environmental review. A camp is not placed wherever you like — you clear the environmental permit first, then talk drawings.
Facing those three hurdles, the advantages of modular container homes are magnified.
Against the terrain: Modular units are steel-framed, with very low foundation demands. On a slope, a camp can be leveled with small concrete strip footings or steel pedestals — no need to dig out the large-volume foundations required by masonry. Many camps in the Iron Quadrangle sit on gentle slopes, with units stepped up the hillside and barely disturbing the original ground.
Against the rain: The short installation cycle lets the whole camp fit inside the dry-season window. We completed the main lifting and connections before the rains, so when the wet season arrived, workers were already living there. Pour-in-place temporary buildings, by contrast, face concrete-curing problems once the rain hits.
Against the environment: Modular units are demountable and relocatable. In the environmental review, we submit a "modular, removable, recyclable" plan — when the mine closes, the camp can be dismantled and moved away, and the ground restored. This is increasingly welcomed in Brazilian approvals, because "a temporary structure that leaves no trace after removal" is written into the product definition itself.
The project sits in the central Iron Quadrangle, at the site of a privately held iron-ore operator, whose Phase-2 expansion required a new worker camp of roughly 400 beds.
The critical timing: The job mobilized at the start of the dry season (April). The first 200 beds took two weeks to install; the second batch was fully in place before the June rains arrived. From the first truck onto site to the whole camp powered up took under six weeks in total.
The units were shipped from our factory in China to Brazil, via the Port of Vitória in Espírito Santo or the bay ports of Rio de Janeiro — both established corridors for Brazilian ore exports with mature supporting infrastructure.
After landing, the steel frames and panels were trucked inland along highways such as BR-381 into the Iron Quadrangle. Road conditions here are better than the mountain mine roads of Southeast Asia — southeastern Brazil has a fairly developed highway network — but the final tens of kilometers inside the Quadrangle are still mine-only dirt roads, just as muddy in the wet season.
This is where the flat-pack approach pays off again: with units broken down and stacked flat, a single 40-foot container carries the components for three complete rooms, cutting the total container count by two-thirds. Ocean and land freight both fall with the container count.
After this project, a few lessons are worth recording:
First, respect the Southern Hemisphere's seasonal calendar. Brazil's rainy season runs from November to March — the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere. The familiar "cram work into summer" logic is reversed here: the rainy season is the downtime, and all major construction must fit into the dry season.
Second, iron-ore soil is stickier than you expect. Weathered hematite soil turns into a thick, slippery paste when wet, and trucks and cranes sink readily. Campsite roads must be hardened or graveled first — don't expect "just compact it" to work.
Third, start the environmental permit early. Brazil's mine-permit cycle can run for months, and the camp's location, drainage and waste plan must all be pre-approved. We obtained the camp's location and capacity permit in the environmental review before starting production — the sequence cannot be reversed.
Fourth, humidity is another enemy, besides islands. Wet-season humidity in Minas Gerais is significant, and combined with mountain day-night temperature swings, steel structures are prone to condensation. Photovoltaic roofs, elevated floors and internal moisture barriers — configurations you would skip on an arid mine — are necessary here.
The Iron Quadrangle is the heart of the global iron-ore supply chain, and a superb proving ground for modular camps: terrain, rain, environmental review and long-distance logistics — four challenges stacked together.
A mine's hardware — crushers, processing plants, conveyor belts — determines its capacity. But what actually keeps that equipment running is a workforce that can live on site and a camp that can house them.
Here, modular container homes are not a "good enough" temporary shelter. They are the one solution that, with terrain, rain and the environment all taken into account, can quickly, compliantly and relocatably answer the question of where the people live.
