From -20°C to 48°C: 9States' 400-Bed Desert Camp for Uzbekistan's Gold Mine, Delivered via the China-Central Asia Railway

Project Background

Uzbekistan is the largest mining producer in Central Asia, producing 120 tonnes of gold in 2025 (ranked 6th globally) and 150,000 tonnes of copper. Under its "Uzbekistan-2030" strategy, the country targets copper output of 500,000 tonnes and gold output of 155 tonnes by 2030, with plans to attract $30 billion in investment into the mining and geology sectors.

Home to the world's second-largest gold mine — Muruntau in the heart of the Kyzylkum Desert — Uzbekistan's flagship producer, Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat (NMMC), is undergoing major expansion. Meanwhile, Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (AMMC) in Tashkent region is advancing a $2.7 billion copper concentrator expansion project. In February 2026, the US and Uzbekistan signed a critical minerals agreement, further accelerating the internationalization of the country's mining development.

As mines expand and new projects launch, existing worker accommodation in the Navoi region and Kyzylkum Desert mining areas is far from adequate. These mine sites lie deep in the desert — the nearest towns are 50 to 100 kilometers away, making daily commuting impractical.

A gold mining company operating in Uzbekistan's Navoi region contacted 9States to build a standardized 400-bed worker camp for its expanding gold mine project.

Challenges with Conventional Construction

Using traditional brick-and-mortar construction presented several serious obstacles:

  • The Navoi and Kyzylkum Desert region lacks sufficient local contractors and skilled labor to deliver within the 4-month timeline
  • Extreme temperatures and frequent sandstorms severely compromise concrete pouring and masonry quality
  • Building materials (cement, steel, bricks) must be transported across desert roads from Tashkent or Navoi city — long distances with poor road conditions, driving costs prohibitively high
  • Managing a large on-site labor force requires additional accommodation, creating a circular problem

9States' Solution — Flat-Pack Modular Camp

9States delivered a 400-bed flat-pack modular camp solution, specifically customized for Uzbekistan's extreme continental desert climate and inland logistics constraints.

Camp Layout

The camp is divided into three functional zones: Accommodation Zone — 120 modular dormitories (96 four-person rooms + 24 two-person rooms for management), all with private bathrooms and heating/cooling air conditioning; Public Services Zone — 150-seat mess hall, medical clinic, laundry, recreation room, and an emergency diesel generator station; Administration Zone — 10 offices and 2 meeting rooms. All buildings are connected by covered walkways to minimize outdoor exposure during sandstorms.

Climate-Adapted Design

  • Enhanced thermal envelope: 75 mm polyurethane sandwich panels (PUR) with a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, combined with thermal-break aluminum windows — effectively handling both 48°C summer extremes and -20°C winter cold
  • Reflective metal roofing: Light-colored aluminum-zinc coated steel roof with solar reflective index (SRI) exceeding 70, significantly reducing summer cooling loads
  • Sandstorm sealing: Weatherstripping and dust screens on all doors and windows; airtight gaskets at building joints to prevent fine sand infiltration during sandstorms
  • Powerful HVAC system: All dormitories equipped with high-capacity inverter heat pumps, covering the full annual temperature range from -20°C to 48°C
  • Elevated steel chassis: 40 cm elevation provides an air gap for thermal insulation, preventing winter ground frost transmission and summer surface heat conduction
  • Extended eaves and shading: 1.5-meter eaves and adjustable sunshades on south-facing elevations reduce direct solar exposure
  • Sandstorm emergency ventilation: Fresh air system with G4+F7 medium-efficiency filtration; switchable to recirculation mode during sandstorm events

Supply Chain & Logistics

Each module is factory-produced in 9States' Shanghai plant in flat-pack form, folding to approximately 30 cm thick panels that fit into standard 40-foot shipping containers. The logistics route follows the China-Europe Railway (China-Central Asia corridor): Shanghai → (truck transport to) Xi'an International Port Station → China-Central Asia Railway via Khorgos border crossing → Kazakhstan (Almaty) → Uzbekistan (Tashkent) — approximately 5,000 km by rail, transit time about 15 to 18 days.

From Tashkent, containers travel approximately 400 km west via the M37 highway to the Navoi mine site. Cargo is dispatched in batches of 6-8 containers per week, synchronized with on-site foundation work. On arrival, a 4-person team can assemble each flat-pack module in approximately 30 minutes using only hand tools — no welding or heavy lifting equipment required.
